Conscript soldiers are expected to be able to make more money during their mandatory military service starting next year.
내년부터 군대 복무 기간 중 장병들의 급여가 인상될 전망이다.
President Moon Jae-in’s policy planning advisory committee has announced a plan to raise the military conscripts’ salaries to 30 percent of the country’s minimum wage of an annual 1,352,230 won ($1,189). This means that draftees will make around 405,669 won, which is almost double the current pay of 216,000 won. The salaries will increase to 40 percent of the minimum wage by 2020, and 50 percent by 2022.
문재인 대통령의 국정기획자문위원회는 장병들의 급여를 올해 최저 임금(1,352,230원)의 30%까지 인상하는 계획을 발표했다. 이것은 올해 21만6,000원인 병장 월급이 내년에는 거의 두 배인 40만5,669원으로 늘어나게 됨을 의미한다. 위원회는 장병 급여를 2020년까지는 최저 임금의 40%, 그리고 2022년까지는 최저 임금의 50%까지 인상한다는 계획이다.
The plan is in line with the President's election pledge to increase soldiers’ pay. The belated raise for conscripts was received well by the public. All Koreans believe they deserve to be paid more for sacrificing a part of their youth and putting their lives on hold to defend the country.
이 계획은 장병들의 월급을 올려주겠다는 문 대통령의 선거 공약에 따라 마련된 것이다. 뒤늦은 장병 급여 인상은 많은 사람들의 공감을 얻고 있다. 청춘을 희생해 자신의 삶을 잠시 중단시키고 나라를 지키는 장병들이 좀 더 많은 급여를 받는 것에 반대하는 국민은 없을 것이다.
A pay raise is not only crucial for lifting the spirits of the soldiers, which will have a positive effect on their combat ability. It is also important in changing the growing public perception that serving in the military is a waste of precious time. Some young Koreans’ frustration with the mandatory military service is understandable given that the children of the privileged find ways to get out of it.
급여 인상은 장병 사기 진작과 이로 인한 전투력 향상을 위해서도 중요하지만 군복무가 시간 낭비라는 인식을 변화시키는 데도 필요하다. 사회특권층 자제들이 쉽게 군면제를 받는 현상을 고려하면 일부 젊은이들이 군복무에 대한 거부감을 보이는 것도 무리는 아니다.
