Virus cost global tourism $460 billion in first half

바이러스, 상반기 전세계 여행산업에 4600억달러 손실 입혔다

The coronavirus crisis cost the global tourism sector $460 billion in lost revenue during the first six months of 2020 as the number of people traveling plunged, according to the United Nations.

유엔에 따르면, 코로나바이러스 사태로 인해 전 세계 관광 부문의 여행자 수가 급감하면서 2020년 상반기 동안 4600억 달러의 관광수입이 줄었다고 한다.

Revenue lost between January and June amounted to "around five times the loss in international tourism receipts recorded in 2009 amid the global economic and financial crisis," the Madrid-based World Tourism Organization, a United Nations specialized agency, said in a statement.

마드리드에 본부를 둔 유엔 전문기구 세계관광기구(UNWTO)는 성명을 통해 1월부터 6월까지의 매출 손실액이 2009년 세계 경제 및 금융 위기 때 기록한 전 세계 관광수입 손실의 약 5배에 달한다고 밝혔다.

International tourist arrivals fell by 440 million during the period, or 65 percent, with Asia, the first region to feel the impact of COVID-19, seeing the steepest decline, it added.

해외 관광객은 이 기간에 65%인 4억4천만 명이 감소했으며 코로나19의 영향을 가장 먼저 경험한 아시아는 가장 가파른 감소세를 보였다고 덧붙였다.

"This represents an unprecedented decrease, as countries around the world closed their borders and introduced travel restrictions in response to the pandemic," the Tourism Organization said.

세계관광기구는 "전 세계 각국이 대유행 사태에 대응해 국경을 폐쇄하고 여행 규제를 도입하며 전례 없는 감소세를 나타내고 있다"고 설명했다.

While tourism is slowly returning to some destinations, the UN body warned that "reduced travel demand and consumer confidence" would continue to hurt the sector for the rest of the year.

일부 지역의 관광산업이 서서히 돌아오고 있는 가운데 유엔 산하기구인 세계관광기구는 "여행 수요 감소와 여행객의 심리적 안정"이 올해 남은 기간에도 관광 부문에 타격을 줄 것이라고 경고했다.

It predicted International tourist arrivals will plunge by around 70 percent in 2020 owing to the coronavirus.

세계관광기구는 코로나바이러스 때문에 2020년 해외 여행자 수가 약 70% 정도 감소할 것으로 예측했다.

The last time international tourist arrivals posted an annual decline was in 2009 when the global economic crisis led to a four percent drop.

해외 관광객 수가 감소를 기록한 것은 2009년 세계경제위기로 인해 4% 감소로 이어졌을 때가 마지막이었다.
