구글, 내년 7월까지 전 직원 재택근무 결정

Google has decided that most of its 200,000 employees worldwide should work from home through next June.

구글은 전 세계 20만 명의 직원 대부분이 내년 6월까지 재택근무를 해야 한다는 결정을 내렸다.

The remote-work order issued on Monday by Google CEO Sundar Pichai affects other companies owned by Google's corporate parent, Alphabet Inc, and marks a six-month extension of the search giant's previous plan to keep most of its offices closed through the rest of this year.

순다르 피차이 구글 최고경영자(CEO)가 월요일 내린 원격근무 지시는 구글의 모기업인 알파벳이 소유한 다른 회사들에도 영향을 미치며, 이는 올해 남은 기간 사무실 대부분을 폐쇄하겠다는 구글의 기존 계획보다 6개월 연장된 것이다.

"I know this extended timeline may come with mixed emotions and I want to make sure you're taking care of yourselves," wrote Pichai, who is also Alphabet's CEO, in an email to employees.

알파벳의 CEO인 피차이는 직원들에게 보낸 이메일에서 "이 연장된 (재택) 근무 일정이 복잡한 감정을 가지고 올 수 있다는 것을 알고 있으며, 나는 당신이 자기 자신을 돌보고 있는지 확인하고 싶다"고 썼다.

Pichai's decision was first reported by The Wall Street Journal. The prolonged lockdown of Google's offices could influence other major employers to take similar precautions, given that the technology industry has been at the forefront of the shift to remote work that has been triggered by the spread of the novel coronavirus.

피차이의 결정은 월스트리트 저널에 의해 처음 보도되었다. 기술 기업들이 신종 코로나바이러스 확산으로 촉발된 원격근무로의 전환에 앞장섰다는 점에서, 구글의 사무실 폐쇄가 장기화될 경우 다른 주요 기업들도 이와 유사한 조치를 취하도록 영향을 줄 수 있다.

Even before the World Health Organization declared a pandemic on March 11, Google and many other prominent tech firms had been telling their employees to work from home.

세계보건기구가 지난 3월 11일 '팬데믹'을 선언하기 전부터 구글을 비롯한 많은 유명 기술기업들은 직원들에게 집에서 일하라고 말해왔다.
