Buffett's Berkshire posts nearly $50 billion loss

워런 버핏의 버크셔해서웨이, 500억달러 손실 발표

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said Saturday he's confident the U.S. economy will bounce back because "American magic has always prevailed."

억만장자 투자자인 워런 버핏은 토요일 "미국의 마법이 항상 승리했기 때문에 미국 경제가 회복될 것을 확신한다"고 말했다.

The 89-year-old made the sanguine prediction about the world's largest economy as his holding company Berkshire Hathaway reported first-quarter net losses of nearly $50 billion.

워런 버핏이 이끄는 지주회사 버크셔 해서웨이가 거의 500억 달러에 달하는 1분기 순손실을 보고했지만, 올해로 89세인 그는 미국 경제에 대한 낙관적인 전망을 내놓았다.

Buffett also announced Saturday that his company had sold all its stakes in four major U.S. airlines last month, as the pandemic clobbered the travel industry.

버핏은 또한 코로나바이러스 대유행이 여행산업에 큰 타격을 주자, 지난달 미국 4대 주요 항공사의 지분을 모두 매각했다고 토요일 발표했다.

"It turns out I was wrong," he said of his acquisition of 10 percent stakes in American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.

Between the purchases that took place over months, and the sale, "the airlines business I think changed in a very major way and could no longer meet Berkshire criteria for profitability," he said.

Buffett's announcement may further hurt airlines already pushed to the brink by coronavirus lockdown measures.

버핏의 발표는 코로나바이러스 락다운 조치로 인해 이미 벼랑 끝에 몰린 항공사에 더 큰 타격을 줄 수 있다.

Berkshire Hathaway, based in Omaha, Nebraska, called its first-quarter setback "temporary" but said it could not reliably predict when its many businesses would return to normal or when consumers would resume their former buying habits.

미국 네브래스카주 오마하에 본사를 둔 버크셔 해서웨이는 1분기 부진을 '일시적'이라고 표현했지만, 많은 기업이 언제 정상화될지, 소비자들이 언제 이전 소비 습관을 재개할지 확신할 수 없다고 밝혔다.

"We've faced great problems in the past, haven't faced this exact problem ― in fact we haven't really faced anything that quite resembles this problem," Buffett said in a lengthy speech on the country's economic history.
