'Next Year's Olympics will be canceled if pandemic not over'

TOKYO (AFP) ― The postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be canceled if the coronavirus pandemic isn't brought under control by next year, the organizing committee's president said on Tuesday.
내년까지 코로나바이러스 유행병이 통제되지 않으면 연기된 2020 도쿄올림픽이 취소될 것이라고 올릭픽조직위원회 위원장이 화요일 말했다.
The pandemic has already forced a year-long delay of the Games and Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori said no further postponement was possible.
전염병의 대유행은 올림픽을 이미 1년이나 연기시켰고 모리 요시로 2020 도쿄 올림픽 조직위원장은 더 이상의 연기는 불가능하다고 밝혔다.
In an interview with Japan's Nikkan Sport daily, Mori was categorical when asked if the Olympics could be delayed until 2022 if the pandemic remains a threat next year, replying: "No."
일본 일간지 닛칸스포츠와의 인터뷰에서 모리 위원장은 단정적이었는데, 코로나바이러스가 내년에도 위협으로 남을 경우 올림픽을 2022년까지 연기할 수 있느냐는 질문에 "아니다"라고 답했다.
"In that case, it's canceled," Mori said.
모리 위원장은 "그럴 경우 취소된다"고 말했다.
Mori said the Games had been cancelled previously only during wartime and compared the battle against coronavirus to "fighting an invisible enemy."
모리 위원장은 올림픽이 오직 전쟁 기간에만 취소되었다고 말하며, 코로나바이러스와의 전투를 '보이지 않는 적과 싸우는 것'과 비교했다.
If the virus is successfully contained, "We'll hold the Olympics in peace next summer," he added. "Mankind is betting on it."
바이러스가 성공적으로 억제되면 "내년 여름 올림픽을 평화롭게 치르겠다"며 "인류는 이에 베팅하고 있다"고 덧붙였다.
Under heavy pressure from athletes and sports associations, Japanese organizers and the International Olympic Committee agreed in March to a year-long postponement of the Games.
운동선수들과 스포츠협회의 거센 압박에 일본 올림픽조직위원회와 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)는 지난 3월 올림픽 경기를 1년 연기하기로 합의했다.
Organizers and Japanese officials have said the delayed Olympics will be a chance to showcase the world's triumph over the coronavirus, but questions have arisen about whether even a year's postponement is sufficient.
주최측과 일본 관계자들은 연기된 올림픽이 코로나바이러스에 대한 전 세계의 승리를 보여줄 기회가 될 것이라고 말했지만, 1년 연기가 충분한지에 대한 의문이 제기되고 있다.
