미국 CDC 소장 “코로나바이러스 2차 확산은 더 심각할 것” 경고

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A second wave of the novel coronavirus in the U.S. could be even more destructive because it will likely collide with the beginning of flu season, one of the country’s top health officials said Tuesday.

지난 화요일 미국 보건당국 고위 관계자는 신종 코로나바이러스 제2차 확산은 독감 시즌 시작과 겹칠 가능성이 큰 만큼 더욱 파괴적일 수 있다고 경고했다.

Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), called on Americans to use the coming months to prepare – and get their flu shots.

미 질병통제예방센터(CDC)의 로버트 레드필드 소장은 미국인들이 향후 몇 달간 독감 예방주사를 맞을 것을 요구했다.

"There's a possibility that the assault of the virus on our nation next winter will actually be even more difficult than the one we just went through," he was quoted as saying in an interview with the Washington Post published late Tuesday.

그는 지난 화요일 오후 발간된 워싱턴포스트와의 인터뷰에서 “다음 겨울 우리나라(미국)를 향한 코로나바이러스의 공격이 현재 겪은 것보다 훨씬 더 심해질 가능성이 있다”고 말한 것으로 알려졌다.

"We're going to have the flu epidemic and the coronavirus epidemic at the same time," he said.

그는 “독감 유행과 코로나바이러스가 동시에 유행할 것”이라고 말했다.

The US has recorded more than 800,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, according to a tally from Johns Hopkins University, with 44,845 deaths – the most reported of any country.

존스 홉킨스 대학의 집계에 따르면, 미국은 코로나19의 첫 발병 이후 80만명 이상의 확진자를 기록했으며, 사망자는 4만4,845명으로 어느 나라보다도 많았다.

Billions of people around the world have been ordered to stay at home in recent months as governments try to prevent the highly contagious coronavirus from overwhelming healthcare systems.

각국 정부가 전염성이 강한 코로나바이러스로 인한 의료체계 과부하를 막고자 노력함에 따라 전 세계 수십억명의 사람들은 최근 몇 달간 집에 머물 것을 요구받았다.

The U.S., like other countries, has scrambled to secure enough ventilators and personal protection equipment for medical staff while the death toll mounts.

미국은 다른 나라들과 마찬가지로 사망자 수가 증가하는 동안 의료진을 위한 충분한 인공호흡기와 개인 보호 장비를 확보하기 위해 안간힘을 쓰고 있다.

Redfield said the virus arrived in the U.S. just as regular flu season – which itself can strain healthcare systems – was waning.

레드필드 소장은 이 바이러스가 정기적인 독감 시즌이 사그라들 무렵 미국에 도착했다고 밝혔다.

If the two diseases had peaked at the same time, he told the Post, “it could have been really, really, really, really, difficult” for health systems to cope.

그는 만약 두 질병이 동시에 최고조에 달했다면, “의료체계가 이에 대처하는 것이 정말, 정말, 정말, 정말, 어려울 수 있었다”고 워싱턴포스트에 전했다.
