Coronavirus forces 850 million students out of school worldwide

코로나바이러스, 전 세계 8억 5천만 학생 등교 막아

PARIS (AFP) ― More than 850 million young people, or about half the world's student population, are barred from their school and university grounds because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, UNESCO said Wednesday.

세계 학생 인구의 절반에 해당하는 8억 5천만 명 이상의 젊은이들이 신종 코로나바이러스 전염병의 세계적 대유행으로 인해 학교와 대학교 캠퍼스 출입이 금지되었다고 유네스코(유엔교육과학문화기구)가 수요일 밝혔다.

Calling it an "unprecedented challenge," UNESCO said schools had been closed in 102 countries, with partial closure in 11 more ― with more closures to come.

유네스코는 이를 "전례 없는 도전"이라며 "102개국에서 학교가 문을 닫았고 11개 국가가 추가적으로 휴교할 예정"이라고 전했다.

"Over 850 million children and youth ― roughly half of the world's student population ― had to stay away from schools and universities," the UN educational organization said in a statement.

"전세계 학생 인구의 약 절반인 8억 5천만 명 이상의 어린이와 청소년들이 학교와 대학으로부터 떨어져 있어야만 했다"고 유네스코는 성명을 통해 말했다.

"This represents more than a doubling in four days in the number of learners prohibited from going to educational institutions," it added, citing figures from late Tuesday.

"이는 교육기관에 가는 것이 금지된 학습자의 수가 4일 만에 두 배 이상 늘어난 것을 의미한다"라고 유네스코 측은 화요일 수치를 인용하여 덧붙였다.

"The scale and speed of the school and university closures represents an unprecedented challenge for the education sector," it said. UNESCO said countries worldwide were rushing to fill the void by offering real-time video classes and other high-tech solutions.

이어 "학교와 대학교 폐쇄의 규모와 속도는 교육 부문에 있어 전례 없는 도전을 나타낸다"고 언급했다. 유네스코는 전세계 국가들이 실시간 동영상 수업과 다른 첨단 기술 해결책을 제공함으로써 그 공백을 메우기 위해 서두르고 있다고 설명했다.

Some countries were offering classes over television or radio.

몇몇 나라들은 텔레비전이나 라디오를 통해 수업을 제공하고 있다.

The organization said it was holding regular virtual meetings with education ministers around the world to find the best solutions and determine priorities.

유네스코는 최상의 해결책을 찾고 우선순위를 정하기 위해 전 세계 교육부 장관들과 정기적인 화상 회의를 개최하고 있다고 밝혔다.

"The current situation imposes immense challenges for countries to be able to provide uninterrupted learning for all children and youth in an equitable manner," it said.

아울러 "현 상황은 모든 어린이와 젊은이들에게 공평한 방법으로 중단 없는 학습을 제공하려고 노력하는 국가들에게 엄청난 도전을 부과하고 있다"라고 덧붙였다.
