Moon lauds Bush for stronger ROK-US alliance
문 대통령 "부시 전 대통령 참석, 견고한 한미동맹 상징"
President Moon Jae-in thanked former U.S. President George W. Bush for his attendance at a memorial service to commemorate the late President Roh Moo-hyun, Thursday, saying his presence represented the strong South Korea-United States alliance.
문재인 대통령은 목요일 조지 W. 부시 전 미국 대통령의 고 노무현 전 대통령의 추도식 참석에 감사를 표하며 부시 대통령의 참석은 견고한 한미동맹을 나타낸다고 전했다.
"I express my sincere appreciation for your attendance at a memorial ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the late President Roh Moo-hyun. Your attendance literally represents how strong the United States-South Korea alliance is," Moon told Bush at the start of a meeting at Cheong Wa Dae.
문 대통령은 청와대에서 부시 전 대통령을 접견한 자리에서 "부시 전 대통령께서 한미동맹의 파트너였던 노 전 대통령의 10주기 추도식에 참석하는 것 자체만으로도 한미동맹의 공고함을 보여주는 상징적인 일이라고 생각한다"고 말했다.
"I've heard that you will present a portrait you painted of the late President Roh. That would be a very sincere symbol of condolence for the family of the late president. It is also a good present for South Korean citizens remembering the late president," he said.
아울러 문 대통령은 "부시 전 대통령께서 손수 그린 노무현 전 대통령의 초상화를 유족들에게 전달하실 계획이라고 하니 유족들에게는 그보다 더 따뜻한 위로가 없을 것"이라며 "여전히 노무현 전 대통령을 그리워하는 우리 국민들에게도 아주 큰 위로가 될 것"이라고 말했다.
Moon's remarks came ahead of Bush's visit to Bongha Village, Roh's hometown, for the event. The President also praised Bush for his concerted efforts with Roh to ink a bilateral free trade deal and for the six-party nuclear talks during their presidencies.
문 대통령과 부시 전 대통령의 청와대 접견은 부시 전 대통령의 노 전 대통령의 추도식 참석을 위해 봉하마을을 방문하기 전에 있었다.
"The joint projects, such as the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement and six-party talks, decided on by the two former presidents, Roh and Bush, meant a lot in terms of developing the bilateral alliance in a comprehensive manner," Moon said. "I and President Trump will also see progress in making the alliance a greater one."
"부시 전 대통령께서 노무현 전 대통령과 함께 결정 내리셨던 한미 자유무역협정 체결, 6자회담 등은 한미동맹을 더 포괄적인 동맹으로 발전시켜 나가는 데 큰 역할을 했다"며 "저와 트럼프 대통령도 그 정신을 이어서 한미동맹을 더 위대한 동맹으로 발전시켜 나가기 위해서 긴밀하게 공조하고 있다"고 전했다.
It was unknown whether the Moon-Bush meeting covered issues relating to North Korea and whether President Moon asked the former U.S. president to relay a message on his engagement-centric North Korean policy to Washington.
이번 접견에서 문 대통령이 북한 문제를 얘기하고 워싱턴에 대북 포용정책에 대한 메시지 전달을 요청했는지는 알려지지 않았다.
In response, Bush shared his memories of having lunch with Roh. Unlike other leaders, Roh was straightforward in his speech and style so both sides were able to have honest and frank talks with each other, Bush said, adding this played an important role in building a good relationship between the two countries.
부시 전 대통령은 "대부분의 정상은 마음속에 있는 말을 솔직하게 하지 못할 때가 많지만 노 대통령은 직설적으로 자기 생각을 말했다"면서 "저와 노 대통령이 편하게 한 대화가 양국 정상간 좋은 관계를 만드는 데 큰 역할을 했다"며 노무현 전 대통령과의 추억을 털어놨다.
The former U.S. leader also paid tribute to Roh's lifetime. Bush said Roh lived a humble life by placing a top priority on the wellbeing of the public.
부시 전 미국 대통령은 고 노무현 전 대통령의 삶을 추모했다. 그는 노 전 대통령이 모든 국민의 인권에 헌신한 겸손한 분이었다고 전했다.
After the meeting, Bush attended the ceremony where he gave a five-minute eulogy and delivered the portrait to former first lady Kwon Yang-sook.
청와대 접견 후, 부시 전 대통령은 추도식에 참석해 5분 길이의 추도사를 낭독했고 권양숙 여사에게 직접 그린 노 전 대통령의 초상화를 전달했다.
