Roh Hoe-chan’s suicide sends shockwaves
충격 불러온 노회찬 의원의 자살
Rep. Roh Hoe-chan, floor leader of the minor Justice Party, was found dead at an apartment complex in Jung-gu, Seoul, amid an investigation into allegations of receiving illegal political funds. He was 61.
정의당 원내대표를 지냈던 노회찬 의원이 불법 자금 수수 의혹 관련 수사를 받던 중 서울 중구 한 아파트 단지에 숨진 채 발견됐다. 향년 61세.
His body was found by a security guard of the apartment complex where the late lawmaker’s mother and younger brother live. The police found a note in which he admitted to receiving 40 million won ($35,200) from an online political forum led by Druking, a blogger at the center of an opinion-rigging scandal involving close aides to President Moon Jae-in. But he denied accepting the money in return for any favors.
노 의원의 어머니와 동생이 거주하는 아파트 경비원이 노 의원의 시신을 발견했다. 경찰은 노 의원이 남긴 유서를 발견했는데 노 의원은 문 대통령 최측근들이 연루된 여론 조작 사건의 핵심 인물인 드루킹이라는 블로거가 운영하는 경제 관련 모임에서 약 4천만 원을 받았다고 시인했다. 그러나 받은 돈은 그 어떠한 청탁과는 관련이 없다고 했다.
His death came as a complete shock to the entire nation. Just last week, he publicly defended himself against the allegations and went on a tour of the U.S. with fellow floor leaders.
그의 사망은 충격적이다. 불과 지난 주만 해도 각종 의혹에 대해 공개적으로 반박하고 동료 원내대표들과 미국 방문길에 오르기도 했기 때문이다.
Despite the weak status of his party in the National Assembly with only six seats, Roh was very popular for his mixture of sarcasm and wit and for his reformist image. He was a rare voice of reason in the Assembly full of self-serving and incompetent lawmakers. His recent push to abolish the special allowance system for lawmakers, which had been abused as a “second paycheck,” had gained much public support. Roh’s death is a huge loss for Korean politics. The outpouring of grief from all spectrums of Korean politics shows how much he was respected and loved.
의석수가 6석에 불과한 정의당 소속이지만 노 의원은 유머를 더한 비판 의식과 개혁파 성향으로 큰 인기를 끌었다. 이기적이고 무능한 의원들로 가득찬 국회에서 드물게 이성적인 목소리를 내는 것으로도 유명했다. 최근 국회의원들의 ‘제2의 월급’으로 전용된 특수활동비 폐지를 주장해 큰 공감을 얻기도 했다. 노 의원의 사망은 한국 정치에 큰 손실이 아닐 수 없다. 정치적 성향을 떠나 계속되는 뜨거운 추모 열기에서 노 의원이 생전에 얼마나 존경과 사랑을 받았는지 알 수 있다.
It is unfortunate he ended his life mired in a corruption scandal. His sudden death is reminiscent of that of former President Roh Moo-hyun, who also took his own life in May 2009 amid a corruption probe. The people’s hope is that such unfortunate cases will never happen again.
노 의원이 부패 스캔들에 연루되어 생을 마감한 것은 불행한 일이다. 그의 갑작스러운 죽음은 2009년 부패 의혹으로 수사를 받던 노무현 전 대통령이 스스로 목숨을 끊은 것을 연상시킨다. 이런 불행한 일이 다시 반복되지 않는 것이 국민의 바람일 것이다.
Despite the lawmaker’s death, the special counsel must keeping doing its utmost to get to the bottom of the Druking scandal.
노 의원의 사망에도 불구하고 특검은 드루킹 사건의 의혹 규명에 한치의 소홀함이 없도록 임해야 한다.
