Japan marks 6th anniversary of 2011 tsunami 일본 쓰나미 발생 6주년 추모식 열려

TOKYO (AFP) ― Japan paused Saturday to mark six years since a deadly earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster devastated a wide swathe of its northeastern coast as more than 100,000 people remain unable or unwilling to return home. 도쿄 (AFP) ― 일본은 토요일 북동부 해안 지역을 크게 휩쓸고 간 쓰나미와 핵 재난으로 10만명이 넘는 사람들이 터전을 잃은 치명적인 지진(동일본 대지진) 발생 6주년 추모식을 열었다.

The magnitude 9.0 quake, which struck under the Pacific Ocean on March 11, 2011, and the tsunami it spawned left about 18,500 people dead or missing. 지난 2011년 3월 11일, 태평양 수면 아래에서 발생한 규모 9.0의 지진과 쓰나미로 인해 약 1만8,500명이 사망하거나 실종됐다.

The massive flow of water overwhelmed cooling systems at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, causing meltdowns in three reactors in the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986. 쓰나미 파도가 후쿠시마 다이이치 원자력발전소의 냉각 시스템을 덮쳐 3개의 원자로에서 노심 용융이 발생했으며, 이는 지난 1986년 체르노빌 이후로 가장 큰 핵 재난이다.

The quake and tsunami caused extensive damage to homes and property while radiation spread over a wide area, with more than 450,000 people evacuating in the immediate aftermath. 지진과 쓰나미로 인해 가옥과 토지에 광범위한 피해가 발생해 방사능이 넓은 지역에 유출되면서, 사태의 즉각적인 여파로 45만명 이상이 대피해야 했다.

More than 123,000 remain displaced, the majority from Fukushima prefecture due to high radiation. 12만 3천명이 넘는 사람들 중 대다수는 후쿠시마현에 둥지를 틀고 살았던 사람들로, 이들은 높은 방사능 때문에 터전을 잃었다.

At a national ceremony in Tokyo, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and other participants bowed their heads in silent prayer at 2:46 p.m. (0546 GMT) ― the exact moment the quake struck ― as did many residents across the affected region. 아베 신조 일본 총리와 여타 참석자들은 도쿄에서 열린 추모식에서 지진 피해 지역 주민들과 지진이 발생했던 시각인 2시 46분(그리니치 표준시 5시 46분)에 고개를 숙이고 묵념했다.
