케런은 이른 아침 제일 먼저 출근한 짐이 어딘가로 팩스를 보내고 있는 것을 보며 묻습니다.

Karen: Hey. 어이.

Jim: Hey. 안녕.

Karen: Who are you faxing so early in the morning? 이렇게 이른 아침 누구한테 팩스를 보내는 거야?

Jim: Kinda hard to explain. 좀 설명하기 힘들어.

짐이 팩스를 보내고 있는 곳은 바로 이전 근무지인 스크랜튼 지사의 드와이트였습니다. 드와이트를 골려 주는 장난은 전근 한 후에도 계속되고 있었군요.

Jim (saying in an aside): So from time to time, I send Dwight faxes. From himself. 가끔씩, 드와이트에게 팩스를 보내요. From the future. 드와이트로부터 보내는 거죠.

이른 아침 스크랜튼 지사. 남들보다 먼저 출근한 드와이트. 여지없이 자신에게 한통의 팩스가 들어와 있습니다. 수신인은 드와이트. 그런데 발신인도 역시 드와이트? 팩스의 내용은 다음과 같았습니다.

" Dwight, " At 8:00 A.M. today, someone poisons the coffee.

" 드와이트, " 오늘 아침 8시, 누군가의 커피에 독이 들어있다.

" Do not drink the coffee. " More instructions will follow.

" 커피를 마시지 말 것. " 더 많은 명령이 내려질 것임.

" Cordially, Future Dwight"

미래의 드와이트로부터.

드와이트는 커피를 가지고 사무실로 들어서며 한 모금 마시려고 하는 스텐리를 발견하고는 쏜살같이 뛰어가서 스텐리의 머그잔을 공중에 날립니다.

Dwight: Nooo! 안 돼!

갑자기 날벼락을 맞은 당황하는 표정의 스텐리에게 드와이트는 이 한마디를 합니다.

Dwight: You'll thank me later. 나중에 나한테 고마워 할거야.

한편 무슨 급한 용건이라도 있는지 아침 출근을 하자마자 본사의 젠이 지사에 방문을 합니다. 최근 젠과의 스캔들 이후 부쩍 어색해지자 마이클은 젠의 방문이 그다지 반갑지 않은 기색이군요.

Michael Scott: There she is. Jan Levinson. First thing in the morning. 여왕마마 납시네요. 잰 레빈슨. 아침부터 보네요.

Jan: Michael. 마이클.

Michael Scott: I love to start my day with a hearty bowl of Jan. 원기 왕성한 잰과 함께 시작하는 하루라니 정말 좋아. " In the morning ~" "이른 아침에~"

젠과 매우 심각한 표정인데 반해 마이클은 콧노래를 멈추지 않고 딴청을 피우고 있군요.

Jan: Michael. 마이클.

Michael Scott: Yes. 네.

Jan: I'm here to tell you that we are closing the Scranton branch. 스크랜톤 지사를 닫아야 한다는 말을 하려고 왔어요.

Michael Scott: I don't understand. 이해가 안 되는데요.

Lee Ought to Grasp Public Sentiment More Accurately (이 대통령은 민심을 보다 정확히 파악해야 한다)

The issuance of statements denouncing the Lee Myung-bak administration's policy and governing style is spreading to all sectors of society.

이명박 정부의 정책과 통치방식을 성토하는 성명의 발표가 사회 전분야로 확산되고 있다.

More than 1,200 professors representing Korea's major universities have signed the ``Declaration on the Current Situation,'' followed by writers, jurists, historians, religious leaders and even their own students. Their demands, which range from President Lee's apology for his immediate predecessor's tragic end to an overhaul of the ways state affairs are conducted, can be summed up into two words: more democracy.

한국 주요 대학을 대표하는 교수들 1,200명 이상이 ``시국 선언"에 서명했으며 문인, 법학자, 역사가와 종교 지도자 및 심지어 대학생들이 그 뒤를 잇고 있다. 그들의 요구는 이 대통령이 전임자의 비극적 최후에 대해 사과하라는 것부터 그의 국정 운영 방식을 전면 개편하라는 것 까지 망라되지만 핵심은 두 단어로 요약될 수 있는데 그 것은 민주주의의 확대이다.

It must be hard for Lee to apologize for former President Roh Moo-hyun's death, because doing so would be tantamount to confirming the widespread suspicion of a politically motivated investigation. Still the President can _ and should _ announce his ``formal'' regrets in the form of an ``informal'' talk, if for no other purpose than soothing a still mournful public. And he ought to sack his justice minister, whom the outgoing prosecutor general said ``sent down guidelines on investigation more than a few times.''

이 대통령의 노무현 전 대통령의 죽음에 대해 사과하는 것은 결코 쉽지 않은 일일 것인데 그렇게 함으로써 광범위하게 퍼져있는 정치적 수사에 대한 의혹을 확인해 주는 셈이 될 것이기 때문이다. 그럼에도 대통령은 아직도 애도하고 있는 대중의 마음을 달래주는 목적에서라도 ``공식적"인 유감을 ``비공식적인" 담화로나마 표시할 수는 있고 또 그래야 한다. 그리고 대통령은 법무장관을 해임해야 하는데 물러나는 검찰총장의 말로는 그의 ``수사 지휘를 받은 적이 한 두 번이 아니기 때문"이다.

Veteran politicians say politics is nothing but the art of winning the public's hearts and minds. But President Lee told religious leaders last week that he ``is neither good at politics nor knows it very well,'' pledging to focus only on economic recovery. If this means he would remain poor at reflecting the prevalent public opinions on conducting state affairs, not just his government but the whole nation will get into serious trouble until he leaves office.

노련한 정치인들은 정치는 대중의 마음을 얻는 예술 그 이상이 아니라고 말한다. 그러나 이 대통령은 지난 주 종교인들과의 만남에서 자신은 ``정치에 소질도 없고 잘 알지도 못한다"면서 경제를 살리는 데만 전념하겠다고 다짐했다. 만일 이것이 그가 지배적인 여론을 반영해서 국정을 운영하는 일에 계속 서투를 것이라는 뜻이라면 임기 내내 자신의 정부뿐 아니라 온 나라가 심각한 문제에 빠져들 것이다.

Instead, Lee should try to become a politician _ not necessarily a populist, though _ by paying more respect to the National Assembly and opposition parties in particular and having more dialogue with people from all walks of life, especially those representing the underprivileged. The President, a former CEO of the nation's largest construction company, might as well leave the details, say, the relocation of an electric pole in an industrial park, to technocrats, and try to pull away a bigger pole _ named political and social alienation _ stuck deep into a majority of the people's hearts.

그와 반대로 이 대통령은 대중에 영합할 필요는 없겠지만 국회 특히 야당을 보다 존중하고 각계 각층의 대표자 특히 사회적 혜택을 받지 못하는 사람들과 보다 많은 대화를 가짐으로써 정치인이 되려는 노력을 해야 한다. 한 때 우리나라 최대 건설회사의 대표 이사였던 대통령은 자질구레한 일들 예를 들어 산업 공단의 전봇대를 옮기는 정도는 기술 관료들에게 맡기고 자탔？국민 다수의 마음속에 깊이 박힌 정치, 사회적 소외라는 더 큰 기둥을 뽑아버리려는 노력을 해야 한다.

The President and his aides at Cheong Wa Dae may think nothing's wrong with this country's democracy, while reiterating the importance of abiding by the law. This is because Lee's political or democratic clock has long stopped at the 1960s and '70s, when Koreans, including Lee himself in his prime, remained content with minimal freedom as they were bent on only economic development.

대통령과 그의 보좌진은 법치의 중요성을 되뇌면서 우리나라의 민주주의에 아무 문제도 없다고 생각할 지 모른다. 이것은 대통령의 정치 내지는 민주주의의 시계가 한창 때의 이 대통령을 포함한 한국 사람들이 경제 발전에만 골몰해서 최소한의 자유로도 만족했던 1960년대 내지 70년대에 멈춰선 지 오래되기 때문이다.

Political scientists agree a country with per capita income of $10,000 or more and experiences of three peaceful changes of political power, cannot go back to authoritarian rule. What the Lee administration is trying is to break this rule and turn back the nation's democratic clock to pre-1987 level, when Koreans staged national protests to put an end to military dictators' rule. The ruling elites are forgetting Koreans' desire for democracy true to its name is never smaller than that for economic advancement.

정치학자들은 국민 일인당 소득이 1만달러를 넘어서고 평화적 정권 교체를 세 번 한 나라는 권위주의적 통치로 돌아갈 수 없다는데 의견을 같이한다. 이명박 정부가 하려는 일은 이 규칙을 깨고 우리나라의 민주주의 시계를 한국인들이 군사 독재 통치에 종지부를 찍기 위해 전국적인 시위를 벌였던 1987년 이전 수준으로 되돌리는 것이다. 이들은 한국인들의 명실상부한 민주주의를 향한 열망이 경제 발전에 대한 열망보다 결코 덜하지 않다는 사실을 잊고 있다.

Lee is breaking the very Constitution on which he took his presidential oath by not allowing free gatherings and expression of opinions in an open space, citing potential violence. The government must let the people hold their rally completely freely at least once, and then the participants would voluntarily ferret out violent demonstrators. The anniversary today of the June 10, 1987 democracy movement will be a good start.

이 대통령은 국민들이 공공장소에서 자유로이 집회를 열고 의사를 표출하는 일을 폭력의 가능성이라는 이유를 들어 불허함으로써 자신이 그 위에 손을 얹고 대통령 선서를 한 헌법을 어기고 있다. 정부는 대중이 완전히 자유롭게 집회를 열도록 최소한 한 번이라도 허용해야 하며 그러면 참가자들이 폭력 시위자들을 자진해서 가려낼 것이다. 1987년 6월10일에 있었던 민주화 운동의 기념일인 오늘이 그러한 출발을 하기에 좋은 날이다.
