141. 외부. 캠퍼스. 프린스턴대학교. 낮. 가을

Nash and Hansen walk together. Long-haired students toss Frisbees and play.

내쉬와 한센이 같이 걷고 있다. 머리가 긴 학생들이 원반던지기 놀이를 하고 있다.

NASH: I was thinking that I might teach.

내쉬: 학생들을 가르칠까 해.

HANSEN: A classroom with 50 students can be daunting for anyone. John, besides, you're a terrible teacher.

한센: 수강생이 50명인 수업은 누구에게나 쉽지 않아. 게다가 자넨 형편 없는 교수잖아.

Hansen chuckles.

한센이 킬킬 웃는다.

NASH: I'm an acquired taste, Martin. I was hoping there still might be something I could contribute.

내쉬: 조금씩 나아지고 있어, 마틴. 뭔가에 기여할 수 있을 것 같아서.

HANSEN: What about the.... Well, you know. Are they gone?

한센: 그건 어떤가… 어, 알다시피. 사라졌나?

Nash looks around. He sees Charles, Marcee, and Parcher walking along. They stare at him with little emotion.

내쉬가 주위를 살핀다. 그는 옆에서 함께 걷고 있는 찰스, 마시, 파처를 본다. 그들은 별 감정 없이 내쉬를 바라본다.

NASH: No, they're not gone. And maybe they never will be. But I've gotten used to ignoring them, and I think as a result they've kind of given up on me. You think that's what it's like with all our dreams and our nightmares, Martin? You've got to keep feeding them for them to stay alive?

내쉬: 아니, 그냥 있어. 영원히 사라지지 않을지도 몰라. 하지만 그것들을 무시하는데 익숙해졌어. 결국 그들도 나를 포기했다고 생각해. 자네 생각에는 그게 우리의 꿈이나 악몽 같은 거지, 마틴? 그것들이 사라지지 않기를 원하기 때문에 계속 간직해야만 하는……?

HANSEN: John, they haunt you, though.

한센: 존, 하지만 자네를 따라다니잖아?

NASH: They're my past, Martin. Everybody's haunted by their past. Well, goodbye.

내쉬: 내 과거야, 마틴. 누구에게나 과거는 있어. 잘 가게.

Nash nods, begins to head off. They have come, now, to one of the stone gaming tables where a couple of kids are finishing up a game of Go.

내쉬는 고개를 끄덕하고는 자리를 뜨기 시작한다. 그들은 이제 두 명의 학생이 바둑 게임을 끝내고 있는 바둑판 하나에 와 있다.

HANSEN: John, I'll talk to the department. Maybe in the spring. Hey, Nash?

한센: 존, 내가 학과에 얘기해 볼게. 봄 학기에. 이봐, 내쉬?

Nash spins. Hansen flips a stone and catches it in his hand.

내쉬가 돌아선다. 한센이 바둑알 하나를 집어 위로 올렸다 다시 잡는다.

HANSEN: You're... scared?

한센 자네… 두렵나?

Nash stares at him. Then he grins and walks over to him.

내쉬는 그를 응시한다. 그리고 나서 싱긋 웃으며 그에게 다가간다.

NASH: Terrified. Mortified. Petrified. Stupefied by you. Now you ought best ring Alicia, or you're gonna get me.

내쉬: 겁에 질리고 기에 눌리고 망연자실하고 넋을 빼앗긴 느낌이야. 자네가 내 아내에게 전화 잘해줘야 해. 그렇지 않으면 자네가 날 책임져야 한다고.

HANSEN: I'll ring her.

한센: 내가 전화할게.

NASH: In an awful lot of trouble.

내쉬: 아주 곤란해져.

As Nash goes and sit down, pull back and up over these two old friends, playing with the hearts of the boys they once were.

내쉬가 가서 앉자 카메라는 뒤로 물러나 그들이 한때 소년이었을 때의 그 마음으로 게임을 하고 있는 이 두 친구들을 비춘다.

해설: 내쉬가 교수로 복귀를 시도하는 장면이다. 조동사 might와 미래 시제 will의 생생한 쓰임새를 접할 수 있다.

John, besides, you're a terrible teacher.조동사 might를 사용하면 '추측, 허가, 희망' 등을 나타낼 수 있으므로 유용하다. 내쉬는 학생들을 가르칠 수 있다는 자신감을 회복했다. ex)You might be right.(네가 맞을지도 모른다.) I told her that she might go.(나는 그녀에게 가도 좋다고 말했다.)You might have helped me with the work.(내 일을 거들어 주었더라면 좋았을 것을.)

I was hoping there still might be something I could contribute. What about the.... Well, you know. Are they gone? 내쉬의 정신 상태를 지켜봤던 한센은 걱정이 앞선다. 영어에는 다양한 시제가 있는데 문법적 접근 보다는 상황을 통한 이해 학습이 훨씬 효과적이다. 국내 학습자들이 어려워하는 시제 중에 미래 진행형(will be~ing)이 있다. 얼마전 Cheesecake Factory라는 유명한 식당에 갔을 때다. 웨이트레스가 메뉴를 주면서 " I will be taking care of you today." 라고 말했다. 이는 " 오늘 손님을 서빙할 것" 이라는 '미래'의 의미가 있으면서도 주문을 받고 음식을 내오고, 중간 중간 " How's everything?" 이라고 묻고, 계산서까지 처리하는 과정을 담당하는 '진행'의 의미가 있는 것이다. 참고로 식당에서 주문을 다 하면 Are you all set?을 많이 사용하는데 " 주문 다 했어요?" 라는 의미가 된다.

Though는 구어체에서 문장 끝에다 '그러나, 그렇다고는 하지만'의 의미로 자주 사용한다. ex)He seems smart. There´s something strange, though.(그는 똑똑해 보인다. 그러나 어딘가 좀 이상한 점이 있다.) 내쉬는 고진감래(No gains without pains)의 결실을 보여줄 것인가.

■ SISTER IS SICK TO DEATH OF BROTHER'S GIFT OF LIFE (생명의 선물을 준 오빠가 진절머리 나는 여동생)

DEAR ABBY: Three years ago, my brother, " Frank," donated a kidney to me. Of course I'm grateful and have told him so many times.

물론 굉장히 어렵겠지만, 고마운 감정이 부담이 되는 것에 지쳤다고 말하고 싶은 충동을 억제하세요. 실제로 자신을 선물로 내어 주었다는 점에서 얼마나 좋은 오빠였는지 계속 이야기 해 주면서, 오빠의 약한 자아에 힘을 불어 넣어 주는 것으로 오빠의 호의에 답하세요. 그것이 공평한 거래입니다.

DEAR ABBY: I'm a busy, full-time doctoral student and live in a large apartment complex where there are only four washing machines for tenants to use.

DEAR ON A SCHEDULE: Rather than putting the clothes into the dryers where they would take up space, you should have placed the items on top of the dryer or on a folding table where they would be easily seen by the person who left them in the washer.

옷을 건조기에 넣어 공간을 차지하도록 하는 것보다, 세탁기에 옷을 내버려 둔 사람이 쉽게 볼 수 있도록 건조기나 접이식 테이블 위에 얹어 놓는 것이 더 좋았을 것 같네요.
