Patient: I am curious about double eyelid surgery. Are there many different kinds of double eyelid surgery?

환자: 쌍꺼풀 수술이 궁금해서요. 쌍꺼풀 수술에도 여러 종류가 있나요?

Doctor: You can divide them into three major groups. There is the “burying method,” the “incision method” and the “partial incision” method. First off, the burying method involves using a fine thread to make a fold in the skin. There is almost no swelling and no scar and the fold within the eyes appears to be very natural. However, there is the potential for this to come undone.

의사: 크게 세 가지로 나눌 수 있어요. ‘매몰법' ‘절개법' ‘부분 절개법'이 있는데요. 우선 매몰법은 가는 실을 이용해 근육과 피부를 잇는 라인을 만드는 방법입니다. 부기와 흉터가 거의 없으며 쌍꺼풀 라인이 자연스럽지요. 단, 수술 후 풀릴 가능성이 있습니다.

Patient: It would be quite terrible for it to just come undone suddenly like that. How about the incision method?

환자: 금세 풀려버리면 좀 곤란한데, 그럼 절개법은 어떤가요?

Doctor: The incision method involves making a cut on the eyelid and, after removing the fat, connecting the muscles. Since there is always the chance of the double eyelid line coming undone with the burying method, the incision method is considered a bit better.

의사: 절개법은 눈꺼풀 피부를 절개해 지방을 제거한 뒤 피부와 근육을 연결합니다. 피부가 두터운 경우 매몰법은 쌍꺼풀 라인이 풀릴 확률이 높기 때문에 절개법이 유리하죠.

Patient: But won’t there be a lot of scarring from such a surgery?

환자: 하지만 아무래도 수술한 흉터가 많이 나겠죠?

Doctor: And that leads us to the “partial incision” method, which has all of the strong points of both the incision method and the burying method. It has less swelling and a faster recovery time than the incision method. Also, the chance of the surgery coming undone is very small and it leaves almost no scar.

의사: 그래서 매몰법과 절개법의 장점만을 취한 것이 ‘부분 절개법’입니다. 절개법보다 부기가 적고 회복 기간이 짧습니다. 또 매몰법보다 쌍꺼풀 라인이 풀릴 확률이 적고 흉터도 거의 남지 않는 것이 특징이죠.
