네이버, 세종시에 제2 데이터센터 짓는다

Naver has chosen Sejong City as preferred bidder for its second data center, which will specialize in cloud computing.

네이버가 클라우드 컴퓨팅에 특화될 제2 데이터센터의 우선협상 부지로 세종시를 낙점했다.

The internet company announced late Friday that it selected the city after a comprehensive review, about four months after abandoning its initial plan to establish the data center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, due to strong opposition from residents there.

IT회사인 네이버는 애초 계획이었던 경기 용인시가 주민들의 큰 반발에 부딪히자 4개월에 걸친 종합적인 검토 끝에 용인시가 아닌 세종시를 선택했다.

"Based on opinions of consultants, the management and employees of the company, we chose the location where Sejong City as preferred bidder, and will discuss the establishment of our data center with the city," Naver said.

네이버 측은 “컨설턴트의 자문 및 경영진·실무진의 의견, 당사의 경영계획 등을 기반으로 세종특별자치시 제안 부지를 우선 협상 부지로 선정했다. 세종시와 당사의 인터넷데이터센터(IDC) 건립에 관한 협의를 이어갈 예정”이라고 밝혔다.

If the two reach an agreement, Naver will begin building the center during the first half of 2020. The target completion date is the first quarter of 2022.

양 측이 최종 합의에 이르면, 네이버는 2020년 상반기에 착공에 들어간다. 완공은 2022년 1분기로 계획됐다.

Naver, which operates its first data center called GAK in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, wanted to build another data center in Yongin in a bid to capitalize on the country's fast-growing cloud computing market.

강원 춘천시에 제1 데이터센터 ‘각'을 가동 중인 네이버는 급성장 중인 국내 클라우드 컴퓨팅 시장을 활용하기 위해 경기 용인시에 제2 데이터센터 건설을 추진했다.

Since its plan was scrapped in June, the company began looking for new bidders in July and shortlisted 10 bidders in September. The company then chose Sejong as preferred bidder after conducting on-site inspections from Oct. 7 to 18.

당초 계획이 지난 6월 백지화되자, 7월부터 신규 후보지를 물색하기 시작해 9월에는 10개 최종 후보지를 선발했다. 이어 10월 7일부터 18일까지 현장점검을 한 뒤 세종시를 우선협상 부지로 선정했다.

The company will invest more than 500 billion won in the second data center to use it for high-tech businesses such as fifth-generation (5G) networks, robots, artificial intelligence (AI) and big data.

네이버 측은 제2 데이터센터에 5,000억원 이상을 투자해 5세대(5G) 네트워크, 로봇, 인공지능(AI), 빅데이터 등 첨단 사업에 활용할 계획이다.

Located 120 kilometers south of Seoul, Sejong is an administrative city with government organizations, research facilities and state-owned corporations. The city welcomed the announcement, saying the administrative city could expect an economic ripple effect from the center.

서울에서 남쪽으로 120㎞ 떨어진 곳에 위치한 세종특별자치시는 정부기관과 연구시설, 공기업들이 있는 행정도시다. 세종시는 행정중심지에서 경제적 파급효과를 기대할 수 있게 되었다며 이번 발표를 환영했다.

"I expressed my gratitude to the 34,000 citizens of Sejong for supporting us during the bidding period," Sejong Mayor Lee Chun-hee said in a statement on Saturday. "We will provide all support to Naver so that the company can establish its data center, which provides infrastructure for the high-tech industry, without any issues."

한편 이춘희 세종시장은 "그동안 성원해준 34만 세종시민께 감사드린다. 네이버가 우리 시에 미래 첨단산업 인프라인 데이터센터를 차질 없이 조성하도록 모든 노력과 지원을 아끼지 않겠다"라고 전했다.
