Korean Air, Asiana to cut domestic cargo services

대한항공, 아시아나항공, 국내선 화물서비스 일부 중단

The country's two full-service carriers, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, will halt parts of their highly unprofitable domestic cargo operations starting October, in an effort to fight decreasing profitability.

대한항공과 아시아나항공이 수익성 감소를 막기 위해 10월부터 수익성이 떨어지는 국내선 화물운송의 일부를 중단하기로 했다.

The move comes as each of the two airlines posted over 100 billion won ($82.6 million) in operating losses for the second quarter.

이는 두 항공사가 지난 2분기 각각 1,000억원이 넘는 영업손실을 기록한 데 따른 조치다.

According to Korean Air's website, starting Oct. 1, it will halt cargo operations at three local airports in Cheongju, Daegu, and Gwangju.

대한항공은 웹사이트를 통해 10월 1일부터 국내선 청주, 대구, 광주공항의 화물 영업을 중단한다고 밝혔다.

"The decision comes as there has been a continuous deficit from cargo operations. We are unsure when we will resume it," a Korean Air official said.

대한항공 관계자는 "화물 영업으로 인한 적자가 누적되고 있다. 언제 재개될지 알 수 없다"고 말했다.

Asiana Airlines also said on its cargo website that it will halt operations at the same three airports as Korean Air, starting October.

아시아나항공도 자사 웹사이트를 통해 10월부터 대한항공과 같은 3개 공항의 화물 영업을 중단한다고 밝혔다.

"The decision was made to better curb deficit. From October, we will only operate cargo services on the Gimpo-Jeju route," an Asiana official said.

아시아나항공 관계자는 "적자 누적을 막기 위해 내린 결정이다. 10월부터 김포~제주 노선만 화물 서비스를 운영할 것"이라고 말했다.

Experts believe the two airlines are trying to ditch several of their cargo routes permanently, as deficits continue to rise.

항공업계 관계자들은 두 항공사의 적자가 지속적으로 증가함에 따라, 화물 노선 일부를 완전히 중단할 것이라는 견해를 밝혔다.

Local carriers have been suffering profit decreases, both in cargo and passenger operations, and the situation is unlikely to improve soon.

국내 항공사들은 화물사업과 여객사업 모두에서 이익 감소를 겪고 있으며 상황은 나아지지 않을 전망이다.
