Main opposition continues to trigger public resentment
끊임없이 국민을 화나게 하는 자유한국당
The Liberty Korea Party (LKP) said Thursday it would expel Rep. Lee Jong-myeong from the party for causing a public uproar for defaming the May 1980 pro-democracy uprising in the southwestern city of Gwangju.
자유한국당이 5.18 광주민주화운동을 폄하해 공분을 일으킨 이종명 의원 제명을 결정했다고 목요일 발표했다.
The LKP's ethics committee came to the decision after determining that a recent public hearing organized by Lee and Rep. Kim Jin-tae at the National Assembly about the uprising violated the spirit of the movement. Jee Man-won, a far-right political commentator, claimed the movement was instigated by North Korean troops to overthrow the South Korean government.
자유한국당 윤리위원회가 최근 이 의원과 김진태 의원이 국회에서 주최한 공청회가 광주민주화운동 정신을 훼손했다는 판단을 한 것이다. 극우 정치평론가 지만원은 북한군이 남한 정부를 전복시키기 위해 선동한 것이라고 주장했다.
The party suspended disciplinary measures against Reps. Kim Jin-tae and Kim Soon-rye, who also defamed the protesters and their families. It will finalize disciplinary measures against these lawmakers after the party convention, which will take place Feb. 27. They used words like "riot" and "monsters" to describe the protesters. A recent poll showed that more than 50 percent of respondents believed the lawmakers should be expelled from the party for the derogatory remarks.
자유한국당은 시위자들과 그 가족들의 명예를 훼손했다는 지탄을 받고 있는 김진태 의원과 김순례 의원에 대한 징계는 보류하고 2월 27일 전당대회 후에 징계를 확정키로 했다. 이 의원들은 광주민주화운동을 언급하면서 폭동이나 괴물 등 단어를 사용한 것으로 알려졌다.
The party's response to the incident has fueled negative public opinion about it. The party's interim leadership apologized, but that has not subsided the people's anger, particularly in Gwangju. Civic groups based in the city, a traditional stronghold of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), and families of the victims of violent government suppression are planning to visit the National Assembly, Saturday, and organize a protest against the three controversial lawmakers.
이번 사건에 대한 자유한국당의 대응에 대해서도 여론이 좋지 않다. 당 임시 지도부 사과에도 불구, 여당인 더불어민주당의 오랜 지지 기반인 광주에서 특히 울분이 일고 있다. 광주 시민단체와 피해자 가족 등은 토요일 상경해 국회 시위에서 망언을 한 의원들을 규탄하기로 했다.
Various state research institutes have been unable to uncover any North Korean involvement in the uprising. Previous court rulings have recognized that the uprising was a protest by Gwangju citizens against disorderly government rule following Chun Doo-hwan's coup d'etat. But social division over the uprising continues, almost 40 years after it took place.
여러 국가 조사 기관은 이미 북한군 개입이 없었다는 결론을 내렸고 과거 사법부 판결에서도 쿠데타로 집권한 전두환 정부의 폭정에 대한 광주 시민의 저항이라고 규정했다.
Survivors and people who lost loved ones in the brutal military crackdown still carry painful memories. Conservatives' incessant distortions of the facts of the uprising have hurt the people of Gwangju for a long time.
이 사건을 직접 겪은 사람들과 당시 사랑하는 가족을 잃은 시민들은 아직도 정부의 무자비한 진압에 대한 기억 속에서 고통을 겪고 있다. 광주 시민들은 오랫동안 보수층의 광주민주화운동 왜곡으로 상처를 받아 왔다.
The ruling party, the Bareunmirae Party and other minor parties are pushing for a bill to revise a special law aimed at punishing those who distort the history of the uprising.
여당 및 바른미래당 등 군소정당들은 광주민주화운동의 실체를 왜곡하는 사람들을 처벌하는 특별법 개정에 나서겠다는 입장이다.
It is disappointing that some lawmakers of the main opposition are still using this dark page of Korean history for political purposes. This goes against the spirit of national unity that society desperately needs right now. The incident shows that the LKP has not changed that much even after the shameful scandal that removed former President Park Geun-hye from office. The people will have no choice but to turn their backs on the party if it continues on this self-destructive path.
아직도 일부 야당 의원들이 한국현대사의 아픈 부분을 정치적으로 이용하고 있다는 것에 실망하는 사람들이 많다. 이번 사건은 한국 사회가 지금 절실히 필요로 하는 국민 통합을 저해한다. 자유한국당이 수치스러운 부패 스캔들로 박근혜 대통령 탄핵이라는 초유의 사건을 겪고도 변하지 않았다는 것을 방증한다. 이렇게 스스로 망가뜨리는 행보를 계속한다면 국민을 자유한국당으로부터 등을 돌릴 수밖에 없다.
