Escalating tension feared to impact local economy

양국간 긴장 고조되면서 국내 경제에 미칠 영향 우려

A trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies is stoking global concerns.

세계 2대 경제대국 간의 무역 분쟁은 전세계적인 우려를 불러일으키고 있다.

U.S.-China tension escalated when the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced a proposed tariff hike on approximately 1,300 Chinese goods worth almost $50 billion earlier this week.

미국 무역 대표부(USTR)가 이번 주 초 약 500억 달러에 달하는 약 1,300개의 중국 상품에 대한 관세 인상안을 발표하자 미국과 중국의 긴장이 고조되고 있다.

The USTR said the duties were in response to “China’s policies that coerce American companies into transferring their technology and intellectual property to domestic Chinese enterprises.” The USTR added these policies “bolster China’s stated intention of seizing economic leadership in advanced technology as set forth in its industrial plans, such as Made in China 2025.”

USTR은 관세 인상이 “미국 기업들이 기술과 지적재산권을 중국 기업에 이전하도록 강요하는 중국의 정책”에 대응하는 차원이라고 밝혔다. USTR은 이러한 정책이 “중국 제조 2025 등 산업 계획에 포함된 선진 기술에서 주도권을 장악하기 위한 중국의 명확한 의도를 보강하기 위한 것”이라고 보고 있다.

Industries that form the core of the “Made in 2025” project, such as communication technology, industrial robotics, machinery, information and aerospace and electric vehicles, could be affected by the additional tariffs. Beijing announced the project in 2015 to develop the country into an advanced manufacturing powerhouse by promoting relevant industries. As such, the Trump administration is seemingly trying to crush China’s ambition to become the world’s leader in advanced technology and future industries.

이에 따라 ‘중국 제조 2025’의 핵심인 통신 기술, 산업용 로봇 공학, 기계, 정보 및 우주 항공 및 전기 자동차 등 산업이 추가 관세의 영향을 받게 될 전망이다. 중국 정부는 선진 제조국으로 도약을 위해 관련 산업 부흥 계획을 2015년 발표했다. 따라서 트럼프 행정부의 이번 관세 인상안은 첨단 기술과 미래 산업 분야에서 세계를 압도하려는 중국의 야망을 누르기 위한 시도로 보인다.
