저비용항공사, 중국 추가 노선 확보 경쟁

Competition among low-cost carriers (LCC) is becoming fierce as additional flight routes to popular Chinese destinations will open soon after Seoul and Beijing recently agreed to increase the number of flights between the two countries.

최근 한중 양국이 양국 간 항공편 수를 늘리기로 합의한 직후, 중국의 인기 목적지의 추가 운수권 배분을 앞두고 저비용항공사(LCC) 간 경쟁이 치열해지고 있다.

All the budget carriers have their eyes on the Incheon-Beijing and Incheon-Shanghai routes, which are considered "golden" as their flight occupancy rate reaches over 90 percent on average during the peak season.

모든 저비용항공사들은 성수기에 탑승률이 평균 90%가 넘어 '황금알'로 여겨지는 인천-베이징, 인천-상하이 노선을 주시하고 있다.

Last month, the two governments agreed to an additional 14 flights a week to Beijing, making a total of 45, and seven more to Shanghai for a total of 56.

지난달 양국 정부는 베이징행 항공편을 주 14회 추가로 증편하여 총 45회 운항, 상하이행은 주 7회 증편해 총 56회 운항하기로 합의했다.

The bidding for the new slots is expected to take place in late April or May.

운수권 입찰은 4월 말이나 5월에 있을 예정이다.

So far, the two routes have been monopolized by the country's two full-service carriers, Korean Air and Asiana Airlines.

지금까지 이 두 노선은 양대 FSC인 대한항공과 아시아나항공에 의해 독점되어왔다.

In addition, the opening of the second Beijing international airport in September is expected to bring more passenger traffic to the country as the airport can accommodate close to 100 million passengers annually.

게다가, 제2 베이징 국제공항이 오는 9월 개장을 앞두며 연간 1억명에 가까운 승객을 추가로 수용할 수 있어 중국행 항공편수는 늘어날 전망이다.

In hopes of gaining a competitive edge during the government bidding, the budget carriers are already emphasizing their strengths, such as the number of aircraft they have in operation and their business experience in other Chinese cities.

정부 입찰에서 경쟁우위를 확보하기 위해, 저비용항공사들은 보유 중인 항공기 수와 다른 중국 도시에서의 운항 경험 등 자신들의 강점을 강조하고 있다.

Many experts believe the additional routes and increase in competition will benefit consumers and the country as LCCs could provide cheaper flights, and the new routes could vitalize Korea's tourism industry by bringing in more Chinese visitors to the country.

많은 전문가들은 저비용항공사가 더 저렴한 항공편을 제공할 수 있고, 새로운 노선이 더 많은 중국인 관광객들을 국내로 불러들이며 한국 관광산업을 살릴 수 있는 만큼, 추가 노선과 경쟁의 확대는 소비자와 국가에 도움이 된다고 주장한다.
