자동차 제조 일자리 수천 개 사라질 전망

Thousands of manufacturing jobs at Hyundai, Kia and other automakers here will disappear when electric vehicles (EVs) and other future cars become mainstream, according to industry analysts Wednesday.

수요일, 업계 전문가들은 전기차 같은 미래 친환경 차가 주류가 되면 자동차 제조 관련 일자리 수천 개가 국내에서 사라질 것으로 전망했다.

They said the size of job cuts will differ depending on the share of fully-electrified cars in the future market, but it seems inevitable for carmakers to trim their conventional jobs, given Hyundai Motor's recent argument with its labor force over job cuts stemming from EVs and hydrogen cars.

향후 전기차 점유율에 따라 감원 규모가 달라질 것이라고 전했지만, 최근 현대차가 친환경차량 제조에서 생겨날 인력감축 문제를 놓고 노조와 논쟁을 벌였던 점을 감안할 때 기존 일자리 축소는 불가피해 보인다.

"An engine car is comprised of approximately 30,000 parts, while an EV needs 20,000 parts," Prof. Hwang Sung-ho at Sungkyunkwan University's Mechanical Engineering Department.

"내연기관 차는 약 3만개의 부품으로 구성되어 있지만, 전기차는 2만개의 부품만 필요하다"고 황성호 성균관대 기계공학부 교수는 전했다.

"This does not necessarily mean that the workforce required for an EV is two-thirds of that of an engine car, but to the question of whether EVs require less labor force, the answer is yes," he said. "There will be job cuts due to the decrease in the number of parts required and a massive number of human resource relocation will follow."

그는 "반드시 전기차에 필요한 노동력이 내연기관 자동차의 3분의 2라는 것을 의미하지는 않지만, 전기차가 적은 노동력을 요구하는지에 대한 질문에 그렇다고 대답할 수 있다"며 "부품 수가 줄어듦에 따라 감원이 예상되며 대규모의 인력 재배치가 진행될 것"이라고 말했다.

Hwang's comment came amid the argument between labor and management of Hyundai Motor overestimated job cuts stemming from the automaker's shift of focus to EVs and hydrogen cars.

황 교수의 발언은 현대차 노조가 친환경차로 패러다임을 전환하는 데 따른 사측의 인력감축 추정치가 과하다는 논란 속에 나왔다.

According to Hyundai Motor officials, the management has recently told the union that it estimates 7,000 jobs will be slashed in 2025, as it expands its manufacturing volume of eco-friendly cars while shrinking the share of engine cars.현대차 관계자에 따르면 사측은 친환경 차 생산을 늘리는 한편 내연기관 자동차의 비중을 축소해, 2025년 7,000개의 일자리가 줄어들 것이라는 예측을 노조에 전했다.

This is similar to a recent move by Volkswagen, which announced earlier this month that it is planning to cut 5,000 to 7,000 jobs by 2023 by not hiring new employees.

이는 2023년까지 신입사원을 뽑지 않고 5,000~7,000명을 감원할 계획을 이달 초 밝힌 폭스바겐의 행보와 비슷하다.
